Located in the foothills of the Sierra Madre, Oaxaca is the capital and largest city of the eponymous Mexican state of Oaxaca and along with the nearby archeological site of Monte Alban were designated in 1987 as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Previously home to the Zapotec and Mixtec cultures, the Spanish arrival in 1521 brought in a new era for Spanish culture to mix with those they found upon arrival.
